Montana, Montana...
Pines, spruces, mountains, big blue skies and 70 degree weather...what could be better? Montana is still one of our favorite states - and this trip did not disappoint.
Driving through the Lewis & Clark Forrest was pretty cool, but it was our first time pulling "Beauty & the Beast" through cliff-hangers. π± π± Thankfully, there was absolutely no traffic. (We literally went miles and miles without seeing another vehicle.) What we did see was breathtaking views and even a momma deer with three little ones crossing the road.
Let's just say it's a good thing we were going as slow as we were because, oh my... momma & babies crossed over directly in front of us. π° π We were just thankful that the last (and smallest) one stopped and did not run across the road in front of us - or we would have hit the little thing for sure. (Praying that he was able to meet back up with his momma and siblings).
So, my friends we experienced some amazing views, all while hanging on "white-knuckled" through the entire experience.
Babb, MT is beautiful - with fabulous views all throughout the Blackfeet tribal reservation. It was well worth the trip to get here. We were blessed to camp within their borders at the base of Glacier National Park, surrounded by none other than the magnificent, snow-capped, Rocky Mountains.
While walking Molly one early evening, we noticed that the fields in the campground were loaded with Prairie Dogs popping their heads up & down. It laughingly reminded me of the arcade game "Whac-A-Mole". π€£
We were only 10 1/2 miles from the Canadian border so we decided to spend a day in Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada. Pretty cool - because we got to change our mph on the truck to km/h π¨π¦π€ (Otherwise, we had no idea if we were going the speed limit or not π³).
Waterton Lakes, Alberta, Canada
The Waterton Park townsite is a quaint little local town where you can see deer walking through the middle of main street or perhaps lying by a house in someone's backyard. Although, it is also home to the stunning Prince of Wales Hotel which is not only surrounded by the Rocky mountains but also a lovely, serene lake.
Since a good portion of the Hwy between Babb, MT and the Canadian border is part of the reservation, there are lots of free roaming cattle along the way. So, you might round a mountain and suddenly find yourself staring at several cattle standing right, smack-dab in the middle of the road. Or even, a Grizzly Bear crossing the road in front of you!!
The views in Glacier National park are phenomenal, especially on the Eastern side of the Park - which includes St. Marys Lake, Logan Pass (the Continental Divide), and so much more.
We experienced for the first time Bison burgers. Hey - the vote is in...and guys, these burgers are delicious! They also have more protein...and get this - we actually lost weight eating them!! π€ Whoo-hoo, you can't beat that!!
Of course, we couldn't leave without tasting Huckleberries. In Montana, you can have huckleberry pie, huckleberry sodas, huckleberry pancakes, huckleberry margaritas, huckleberry lemonade - well...you name it and they have "huckleberried" it! π€£π€£
After leaving Babb, we headed west towards Polson, MT (home of the beautiful Flathead Lake which is located right outside of West Glacier National Park). Yes, for all you fishermen, Keith finally got a restful day of fishing.
We were once again blessed to camp within a Native-American tribal reservation in Ronan, MT. We also had the opportunity to attend a wonderful, Sunday morning worship service at a strong, spirit-led church which definitely had a heart for spreading the "Good News".
This was truly a diverse church - led by a pastor and his extended family from the Samoan Islands, to mainly a Native American congregation, yet with many non-Native Americans as well. The message reminded us somewhat of Paul’s sermons to the Gentiles (when the pastor spoke of Christianity not being just a “white man’s religion” – but the Word, which existed since the beginning of creation, who gave Himself for all mankind). It was like none other – and very rewarding. We also appreciated the many invitations to a special cookout/ballgame event with a nearby tribal town that they were seeking to evangelize.
Our time in Montana draws to a close. So far, throughout our Northwest journeys, we've seen deer, elk, longhorn sheep, and even a grizzly bear...but so far no moose! Perhaps we will see these magnificent creatures when we explore Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah or Colorado. So stay tuned...
In the meantime, it is time to head to Washington State, the land of both mountains and oceans. How awesome must that be...can't wait to find out!!
