Rhode Island (Sept 7th - Sept 10th)

Newport, Rhode Island

Rhode Island... love it, love it, LOVE IT!!  This is such a beautiful, little state we wish we had more time to visit & explore.   It is definitely one that we will visit again.

We camped in a cozy little campground in Portsmouth, RI, where we soon discovered two of our close neighbors were both from the Memphis area.   Of course the weather was fabulous with just a crisp of fall in the air.  The best time of year for a campfire and to meet neighbors!

On the day of our arrival we ate dinner at a unique & interesting little Hawaiian shack down the road.  We enjoyed the food and a long, engaging conversation with the owner.  If you're ever in this part of the country, be sure and stop by the "Flat Surf".

The next morning we ventured out to walk the 3 1/2 mile cliff walk along the seashore & Newport mansions.  These lavish mansions were built by business moguls and heirs of the 19th century as summer "cottages", where they spent 6 weeks out of the year.

Naturally, I would choose to wear flip flops for what I thought would be a nice little stroll down the path.   Well, let's just say that flip flops aren't the best shoes to wear when climbing over large rocks (but somehow I managed without incident).

After eating a quick bite in town, we walked the 3 1/2 miles back along the frontside of the mansions, which were extravagant & absolutely gorgeous.  I think you will thoroughly enjoy checking out the pictures below.

We attended church on Sunday in nearby Fall River, MA.   (Shout out to our dear friends Carol & Norm Seiders for pointing us to this wonderful little congregation).  The minister's wife was from the Memphis area and he had also attended Harding Graduate school in the early '80's.

Although our time was short, we did get to experience some pretty scary bridges crossing through the state as we headed into Connecticut. 😱😰   Even so, as we leave Rhode Island in the rearview mirror, we know this is one state that we definitely plan on visiting again.
